Allergy medications: their use and effect

An allergy is an increased sensitivity to certain substances, often resulting in unpleasant complaints. These substances can be, for example: pollen grains, animal dander, mold spores, dust mite droppings, or food components . They mainly enter through the respiratory tract or the skin, for example because the skin comes into contact with nettles, cosmetics, jewelry, cleaning products, dust mites or grass pollen and tree pollen. Other possibilities to cause allergies are an insect bite or something specific food or the use of certain medications.

Antihistamines are usually sufficient

In many cases, blood is taken and examined for an allergy, after which the GP gives advice or prescribes medication or refers to an allergist. Depending on the blood test, the GP will often opt for treatment with antihistamines because this is usually sufficient. Histamine is a substance in the body that dilates blood vessels, making allergies more likely. These allergy medications ensure that histamine works less powerfully. If you have problems with your nose or eyes, the medication consists of a nasal spray or eye drops. In other cases, the form of the medicine is a tablet or a capsule or a drink.

Use for short or long periods of time

The duration that the medication must be used depends on the severity of the complaints. In case of an insect bite or eating something that has caused an allergy, it should be used until the complaint has disappeared, which is usually a relatively short time. For complaints that last a long time, for example an allergy to the nose or eyes, the medicines must be used for a long time. The medications often help within one to two hours.

Side effects

Like almost all medicines, allergy remedies can also cause unintended complaints, which are called side effects. But these side effects, such as fatigue or insomnia, are generally not serious and will disappear within one to two weeks. When stopping medication due to side effects, the doctor should always be notified.

Pay attention to driving skills

Many medications state that they can affect driving ability. When using it, it is important to know what the effects can be before getting on a motorcycle or moped or getting behind the wheel of a car. About one in six Dutch people use medications that can affect their ability to drive. In this respect, medication use can be compared to alcohol in traffic. With some medicines the effect is very clear through dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Other drugs reduce responsiveness without this really being noticed and there are drugs that cause indifference or reduce muscle control.
